UppFutures is a charitable foundation that aims to get every single child in Ghana attending school.
But how will we do that?
We are beginning by attempting to tackle one of the most widespread but easily resolved problems – school uniforms, or a lack of.
Why are school uniforms a problem?
Whilst education is mostly free for elementary and middle-school aged children, uniforms are often compulsory. Many families cannot afford to purchase uniforms for their child, meaning that they cannot attend school. It is estimated that 1.4 million children in Ghana do not attend school, and whilst there are multiple factors that affect each individual case, the importance of removing one barrier to education cannot be undervalued.
We will be working with local partners to identify schools (usually in poorer regions outside of the capital city, Accra) who would benefit from our programme, usually identified by having a high rate of student absenteeism. We will then use a local supplier to tailor the required uniforms and send them to the beneficiary school.
Whilst we are aware that these problems are widespread in many countries, not only in Africa but many continents across the world, our knowledge and experience in Ghana means we are best equipped to help in this region first.
